The Taos Mountain Dragons Ice Hockey Team comprise players from the Taos, New Mexico area, as well as Vail, Colorado, Breckenridge, Colorado, and occasionally other areas. These small towns do not have enough players to field a competitive team alone. By combining players we are able to compete at tournaments around the country. This provides a tremendous experience that would otherwise not be available.
The Dragons were first put together in 2001 and continue to this day. The Mountain Dragons are a unique team, since we only play tournaments and have never had a practice. The kids all play on local teams in their small towns, and then meet. At our first tournament in Denver we literally had to introduce ourselves to each other! The kids all have the common ground of loving hockey, and new friendships have developed.
In 2001-2002, we played 37 games in 8 different tournaments! In 2003 and 2004, due to other commitments, we only went to one tournament, in Phoenix, at the end 2003 and 2004. In addition to having a great time, we were in the championship game in every tournament but one.
